Music Stars Making a Social Impact: Why & How Cadence Grace, Ann Chaplin, and Stacey Zegers of Runaway Angel Are Helping To Change Our World

As a part of our series about stars who are making an important social impact, I had the pleasure of interviewing Cadence Grace, Ann Chaplin, and Stacey Zegers of Runaway Angel.

For a decade, Cadence, Ann, and Stacey have been delivering hook-filled country harmonies and high-energy shows rooted in an unwavering friendship expressed through the pure joy of making music.

These three Canadian women have built a loyal fanbase for Runaway Angel alongside industry-wide recognition as 2016 Canadian Country Music Association Discovery Artist Nominees, seven Country Music Association of Ontario Award nominations, two iTunes Canadian Country Top 5 charting albums, and a previous Top 50 Canadian country radio charting single (“Witness”).

Cadence’s courageous public battle with leukemia — which earned her the Extraordinary CML Story Award at the 2019 Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Network Conference and the 2019 CMAO Generous Spirit Award — put Runaway Angel on hiatus in 2019, but the group has re-emerged with a new 2023 single (“Beach Please”), a stronger connection, and a greater purpose.

Spotlight On Runaway Angel- Hidden Beats Magazine

Spotlight on Runaway Angel How did Runaway Angel start? Stacey had the initial idea about starting a trio. She had aways loved The Chicks and saw opportunity in the fact that there were really no other female groups in the Canadian scene at the time. She and Cadence were friends and she was dead set on having Cadence involved (who emphatically said no). Ann and Cadence were friends, so when Cadence finally gave in to Stacey’s urging, she suggested Ann as the third! We all got together to just hang out, feel out the chemistry and write music. The rest is history! Read The Full Interview

Daily Inspiration: Meet Runaway Angel- Nashville Voyager

Daily Inspiration: Runaway Angel Today we’d like to introduce you to Runaway Angel. Hello Runaway Angel. We’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.Hi, we’re Stacey, Ann, and Cadence, and we make up the country trio Runaway Angel. In 2013, we were all solo artists and friends based on Ontario, and we were starting to lose a bit of our love for music because the administrative aspects of owning a business were taking away from our time to be creative. Stacey eventually convinced us all to join forces and start a band together so we could share the workload as well as share the special moments with other people, and that’s how Runaway Angel began. Since 2013, we’ve released two albums, 7 radio singles, toured Canada and Europe, and had multiple placements in film and television. In 2018, we took a 4-year break when Cadence was diagnosed with Leukaemia. When her treatments were unsuccessful, she ultimately had a life-saving bone marrow transplant in 2019. While her recovery took longer than we all expected, we are so grateful to have another chance to make music together and start this next chapter. Cadence has a place in Nashville now and splits her time between there and Canada and we wrote our latest single ‘Beach Please’ with Kate Malone while we were down there in January.
